THE LORD'S ROD UPON THE EDOMITES:
THE BOOK OF OBADIAH 1-15.
Obadiah means "worshipper of Jehovah." There are only 21 verses in the book of Obadiah. The land of Edom is doomed. Edomites were
descendants of Esau, the brother of Jacob. Though the Edomites were
related (cousins) to Judah and Israel, they sided with their enemies. People of Edom watched strangers carry away the people of Jerusalem as captives and they were happy. They stood at the crossroads to prevent them from escaping and stole their goods when they were in trouble. The purpose of the book of Obadiah in the bible is to show that God judges those who harm his people.
The author of the book was Obadiah.Very little is known about him. However, he was among the Minor Prophets that God used. Obadiah is the shortest book in the Old Testament. The original audience which this book addresses is the Edomites and the Jews in Judah (the southern kingdom). The Key verse in this book is verse -15 - As you have done, it will be done to you; your evil deeds will return upon your own head.
THIRTEEN FACTS ABOUT THE EDOMITES:
1. They were a fierce nation
2. They were proud warriors
3. They built their homes on rocks
4. They felt secure and free from external attacks
5. They were self sufficient. They didn't need any help from other
nations!
6. They were a wealthy nation
7. They were proud and boastful
8. They were quite treacherous
9. They were betrayers
10. They enjoyed plundering other nations
11. They were merciless murderers
12. They were overconfident
13. They were wise people
God has children (the saved people). He has men and women who He has chosen as his very own. Edom was a mountainous nation. They were fierce and proud warriors. Their homes were built on rocks. This made them become proud and self confident. A humble person is more secure than a proud person. They felt secure in their city curved right into the rock. Edom was noted for its wise people. However, there is a difference between human wisdom and God's wisdom. Of all the people, they should have been ready to help their brothers/cousins (Judah) who lived in the north. Instead of helping Israel and Judah when they were in need, Edom had allowed them to be destroyed and even had plundered what was left behind. Edom therefore, acted like an enemy and would be punished.
Instead, they took the advantage of Judah's suffering. They waylaid the fugitives at the crossroads, captured them and eventually delivered them to the enemy. They even plundered their blood relatives. Edom had rejoiced over the misfortunes of both Israel
and Judah, and yet the Edomites and the Jews descended from two
brothers - Esau and Jacob (Genesis 25:19-26). Any person who does not help God's people is God's enemy. But just as these two brothers were constantly fighting, so were Israel and Edom. Edom was Judah's southern neighbor, sharing a common boundary. But neighbors are not always friends, and Edom did not like anything about Judah. Edom was happy to see Judah in trouble. Their hatred made them want the nation destroyed. Due to their wrong attitudes and actions, God wiped out Edom. The people of Edom betrayed their blood brothers in times of crisis and assisted their brothers' enemies. Today, Edom is nowhere to be found. God destroyed it forever (verse 10), but Judah still exists. Those who are high and powerful today should not be overconfident in themselves, whether they are a nation, a corporation, a church or a family. Just as Edom was destroyed for its pride, so will anyone who lives in defiance of God. Sin includes not only what we do, but what we refuse to do. We must never be happy about others' misfortunes, even if we think they deserve them (Proverbs 24:17). We should not use our physical strength, education, wisdom, wealth, intelligence or our financial power to oppress other people by either exploiting or plundering them. Closing Prayer. Father in the name of Jesus Christ, help us to desist the abuse, or misuse of any physical, spiritual or intellectual endowment. Help me so that I do not rejoice when my brother is experiencing a crisis, but instead stand with him.
