INTERCESSION
“And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many
witnesses entrust to reliable men who will also be qualified to
teach others.” (2 Timothy 2:2)
THE MINISTRY OF INTERCESSION
(Part One).
"I have posted watchmen on your walls, O Jerusalem; they will never
be silent day or night. You who call on the Lord, give him no rest till
he establishes Jerusalem and makes her the praise of the earth."
(Isaiah 62:6-7)….Someone calls to me from Seir “Watchman, what is
left of the night? “Watchman, what is left of the night?”
The watchman replies, "Morning is coming, but also the night. If you
would ask, then ask; and come back yet again." (Isaiah 21:11-12). "I looked for a man among them who would build up the wall and
stand before me in the gap on behalf of the land so I would not
have to destroy it, but I found none." (Ezekiel 22:30). "Son of man, I have made you a watchman for the house of Israel; so hear the
word I speak and give them warning from me."
THE INTERCESSOR AND INTERCESSION
An intercessor is a spiritual watchman or watchwoman who
persistently pleads and prays for others. The intercessor has a
God given responsibility to execute, through the divine enablement of the Holy Spirit. The intercessor is on duty twenty four hours round the clock and should maintain a high and exceptional degree of spiritual sensitivity. As a spiritual watchman, the intercessor looks ahead and should maintain a clear vision into the spiritual realm. He peers into the distance through prayer. He foresees the attacks of the enemy and steps in, in good time to thwart the plans of the devil. The intercessor acts (intercedes) instead of reacting (complaining, wondering or arguing). Then the king said to the man of God, “Intercede with the Lord your God and pray for me that my hand may be restored.”
So the man of God interceded with the Lord, and the king’s hand
was restored and became as it was before. (1kings 13:6)
You as an intercessor (If you have been given this gift by the Holy
Spirit), you can guard the flock of God through intercession.
You are a bodyguard who guards individuals and protects them
from danger. You represent Jesus Christ by watching over others.
There would be fewer disasters among Christian leaders if we
had more faithful intercessors to intercede for them. Pastors and other church leaders need intercessors to intercede
for them because:
(a) They have more responsibility and accountability.
(b) They are more exposed to temptation. The higher you go on
the ladder of Christian leadership, the higher you go on Satan’s
list of the most wanted.
(c)They are more targeted by the spiritual warfare. In this
regard, witches and other servants of darkness have entered into
an evil covenant against the pastors. They pray to Satan for the
breakdown of marriages of Christian leaders.
(d)They have more influence on others than the other Christians.
(e)Their lives are easily noticed and seen more than other Christians.
SOME BIBLE CHARACTERS WHO WERE USED BY GOD AS
INTERCESSORS
1. MOSES-
…In accordance with your great love, forgive the sin of these people, just as you have pardoned them from the time they left Egypt until now. (Numbers 4:19).
2. DANIEL, MESHACK, SHADRACK & ABEDNEGO
"Then Daniel returned to his house and explained the matter to his
friends Hananiah, Meshael and Azariah. He urged them to plead for
mercy from the God of heaven concerning this mystery, so that heand his friends might not be executed with the rest of the wise men of Babylon." (Daniel 2: 17-18)
3. ESTHER AND MORDECAI
"Then Esther sent this reply to Mordecai: Go, gather together all the Jews who are in Susa, and fast for me. Do not eat or drink for three days, night or day. I and my maids will fast as you do. When this done, I will go to the king, even though it is against the law. And if I perish, I perish." So Mordecai went away and carried out all of Esther’s instructions. (Esther 4:15-17).
QUALIFIED INTERCESSORS
The Living God is continually looking for warriors, troops,
intercessors, mature fighters, spiritual heavy weights, but not
civilians or spiritual children. The Lord God is looking for
determined people that He can train (Hosea 7:15a), to wake up
and take spiritual weapons, then go ahead into the spiritual battle
ground and start fighting. We need to wake up and be prayerful. Intercession is not a self- centered activity. It doesn’t mean looking at your own needs, but it involves doing spiritual warfare on behalf of others. Some of the areas that require intercessory prayers are; (a) Mass massacres in many parts of the world, (b) Earthquakes (c) Air crashes (d) Sinking ferries (e) Derailing trains (f) Road carnage (g) Arson, etc. When you are an intercessor, God is faithful and He minds your welfare as you mind that of the other people. On the other hand, from His throne, God can always see the following things
happening all over the world: (1) Misuse of power (2) Misappropriation of funds (3) Fraud (4) Nepotism (5) Corruption
(6) Misinterpretation of the scriptures (and thus misapplication of the sciptures. This is a problem caused by lack of Hermeneutics). (7) Misleading of both secular and church followers. (8) Deception of masses by the enemy, and all other manner of wickedness. When God doesn’t find qualified intercessors, his judgment is inevitable. God is looking for intercessors; men and women who can stand on the wall and in the gap. (Ezekiel 22: 30-31) An intercessor pleads with God and refuses a situation which is
unfavorable to a particular individual, people or a situation. In
Kenya and Africa at large, we need an army of intercessors-prayer
warriors. An intercessor should be somebody who can be identified with. He is somebody that God can depend on and can LISTEN to.
An intercessor needs to have a big heart and a big price to pay, in
terms of prayer and intercession and fasting. If you are an intercessor, all the people in a given region (eg in a District) are yours. The heart of an intercessor accommodates all the people he should intercede for. An intercessor is not discriminative. He covers even people of other denominations.
THE QUALITIES OF AN INTERCESSOR
An intercessor should:
(1) Wrong no one
(2) Corrupt no one
(3) Exploit no one
(4) Condemn no one
(5) Live and die for the people he is interceding for
(6) Take greatness and confidence and believe that God can do
the best for them
(7) Take pride in them
(8)Take joy in all troubles
Intercession involves raising a wall to protect the people one is
interceding for. An intercessor is a friend of God (Genesis 18: 17-
25). He must have insight, watching for danger which may come, so that he may warn the people. He should be able to see far spiritually. In other words, he should maintain spiritual long
sightedness. The day has come for great intercessors to take up
spiritual weapons and rise to intercession. So he said he would destroy them–had not Moses, his chosen one, stood in the breach before him to keep his wrath from destroying them (Psalm 106: 23). God is not looking for important people in the nations, but for intercessors. The ministry of intercession is very important. In a nutshell, intercession is the primary ministry (foundation) where other ministries are built. Before you become a Bishop, a Pastor, a Teacher, etc. you must be an intercessor. Moses, Jesus Christ, Nehemiah, Daniel and Mordecai were intercessors. As an intercessor, you care for the souls of saints and other people as well. Intercession takes considerable time. A leader should primarily be an intercessor. Lives are influenced more through intercession than preaching! Prayer changes a nation faster than preaching! An intercessor should spend more time in the private than in the public.
