THE ANOINTING THAT ABIDES-Part One
“But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and all of you know
the truth” (1John 2:20). “As for you, the anointing you received from
him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But as
His anointing teaches you about all things and as that anointing is
real, not counterfeit-just as it has taught you, remain in Him” (1 John
2:27). In this timely and precise article, we are going to have an in-depth study of the anointing that abides. First and foremost, there are two key terms whose meanings we need to understand before we
proceed on. The first term (word) is, Anointing. This word has two
meanings. The first meaning is, to pour oil upon somebody, by
another. This kind of anointing is especially done to a wounded or sick person to provide a soothing effect or bring healing. We can regard it as physical anointing, because physical oil is normally smeared on somebody’s body, particularly the forehead or any other wounded part of the body.
They drove out many demons and anointed many sick people with oil
and healed them (Mark 6: 13). He went to him and bandaged his
wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own
donkey, took him to an inn and took care of him. (Luke 10:34). Is any
one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over
him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord. (James 5:14).The second type of anointing can be precisely referred to as
spiritual anointing. In this anointing, although physical material may be used, the principle idea is to charge an individual with a divine appointment. The implication here is that one has been called or commissioned by the Holy Spirit, to serve God. The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to
preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom
for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the
oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour. (NIV )-Luke
4:18-19). Bible characters like Elisha (2 kings 2:13-15) and David, received this anointing. “So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and from that day on the Spirit of the Lord came upon David in power."(1Samuel 16:13a). Anointing in another dimension is to bestow one with power of the Holy Spirit, to serve or act. The anointing of the Holy Spirit was fulfilled on the day of Pentecost. (Acts 2:1- 41). The anointing that abides entails special honor and privilege to the person who has been anointed. “The Lord forbid that I should do such a thing to my master, the Lord’s anointed, or lift my hand against him; for he is the anointed of the Lord.” (1 Samuel 24:6).
“Do not touch my anointed ones; do my prophets no harm.” (Psalm
105:15). The second key word is, abide. This word has about four
different meanings but for our case as far as this article is concerned, the appropriate meaning is, to endure, to bear or to persist. Anything that is persistent in nature, has either latent (existing, but not yet very noticeable) or visible signs of existence and continuity. The anointing of a man of God should be persistent and unlimited during his tenure of service to God. A man of God should strive to ensure that his anointing leaves an impact or a landmark to the people of his contemporary generation. You can fall sick as a man or woman of God even when you have the anointing that abides. The anointing that abides does not actually exempt the one who has it from the conventional problems of this present life. Elisha the man of God fell sick and died. (2 kings 13:14).
Nevertheless, Elisha’s bones continued to have the anointing that abides in the tomb where he was buried. “Once while some Israelites were burying a man, suddenly they saw a band of raiders; so they threw the man’s body into Elisha’s tomb. When the body touched Elisha’s bones, the man came to life and stood up on his feet." (2 kings 13: 21).
THE FIVE THINGS WHICH MAINTAINED ELISHA’S ANOINTING (2 KINGS 5: 1-18).
Great men have their own share of great problems. That was the
case of Naaman, the Syrian king’s army commander. Naaman had a
problem of the dreaded and incurable disease known as leprosy.
(1) DON’T LOSE THE SIGHT OF YOUR CALLING, BY GOD
Magnify your office in the ministry that God has called you to serve.
“We have different gifts, according to the grace given to us. If a man’s
gift is prophesying, let him use it in proportion to his faith. If it is
serving, let him serve; if it is teaching, let him teach; if it is
encouraging, let him encourage;
if it is contributing to the needs of others, let him give generously; if it
is leadership, let him govern diligently; if it is showing mercy, let him do it cheerfully. (Romans 12:6-8). As a man or woman of God, be humble and take note that humility
doesn’t mean that you should place yourself down. Master your office through God’s will, to avoid following the wrong Ministry. Many of the so called pastors in the churches are evangelists! When
one works in the wrong office, there are chaos and problems to
himself and other people who he is in contact with. Jonah the son of Amittai secretly tried to enter the wrong office of being a businessman, (Jonah 1:3) instead of remaining in the office of a preacher(Matthew 12:41b). If you know what you have been anointed to do, go ahead and work for the Lord in that calling. If you know that there are people who need to benefit from your anointing, go to them. Don’t try to imitate anybody.
(2)REFUSE TO GET INTO RELIGIOUS ARGUMENTS OR DEBATES (2 KINGS 5:9-12)
Naaman was advised by Elisha’s servant to go and wash himself
seven times in river Jordan, but he received the message with resistance and bitterness. Keep your distance from wayward people
who try to engage you into petty and meaningless arguments as far
as the word of God is concerned. Stick to the word of God only,
because what God is saying is more important and helpful than
what people are thinking and saying. God does not change His
mind to please us. We should be ready to listen and obey what He
tells us to do.
(3) REFUSE TO ENGAGE IN DEBATES OF NON-ESSENTIALS AND INSIST ON GOD’S WAY (2 KINGS 5:13)
When Naaman started arguing, complaining and saying that the
rivers at Damascus were better than Jordan, that didn’t move
Elisha the man of God. Neither did it make him change his mind to
suit Naaman’s convenience. Insist on God’s way. Don’t bend low in
order to please important people in the society. Tell them the truth
from God and what God wants them to do exactly. It doesn’t matter whether such people will feel offended. Don’t compromise in matters concerning God.
(4) REFUSE TO GIVE RELIGIOUS EXPLANATIONS AND INSIST ON
OBEDIENCE (2 KINGS 5:14-15)
Naaman went down to river Jordan seven times as Elisha had
instructed. A true disciple should obey instructions from a man of
God who has the true anointing that abides. False prophets have
counterfeit anointing and they cannot be relied upon since their
master (the devil) is a liar. Elisha didn’t start explaining or persuading Naaman just because
he was a dignitary from Syria.
(5) REFUSE TO BE BLINDED WITH GIFTS THAT WEAKEN YOUR
ABILITY TO RESIST TEMPTATIONS THAT ARE COMING BECAUSE
OF YOUR POSITION OR CALLING (2 KINGS 5:16-18)
Be contented with what you have. Naaman wanted Elisha to accept
a gift after his healing but Elisha refused categorically. Naaman was
confused and he failed to understand the nature of the God who had healed him. He still wanted to continue worshiping the gods of Syria, in the temple of Rimmon, the god of Syria.
