THE BITTER MEMORIES
At the banks of Ivovoa River, I sat on the big rock, with my elder sister Lucy. We cried and wept, when we remembered our departed parents.
The bitter memories of how some thugs, ambushed our parents one day, as they walked home from the market place, haunted the two of us.
When we recalled the brutal way and the weapons that the merciless thugs used, to terminate the lives of our parents, we cried relentlessly.
As the passers-by crossed the river,
they saw us crying in agony. They inquired from us, just to know what had befallen us, but they could not help.
Their consolation could not bring
our parents back to life. We continued to cry, as the bitter memories tormented our hearts painfully. The people who spotted us at the river bank, tried to console us but their consolation, was only a futile task.
BE CONSIDERATE, SIR
But sir, be considerate. This money you are offering me is not enough.
Remember, I have to eat and drink also. My children have to be fed.
My children’s teacher wants me to pay the outstanding balance, of last year’s fee.
Try to be considerate sir. This wage is not enough, for the day’s work.
Last year I toiled for you, tirelessly.
Remember, you gave me the same wage, for this tiresome and demanding job. Be considerate sir,
and give me a higher wage rate.
You are not a stranger, in our land,
to be told how the general standard
of living has continuously escalated. How shall we survive,
in such a hostile environment,
where the price of almost every essential commodity, has gone up? I implore you sir, to be considerate. This money is not enough, even for my family’s meals, leave alone the other basic necessities.
I honestly and humbly appeal to you sir, to do the needful. The going is getting tough, and something must be done, to alleviate the situation, before the tough gets going.
At least, try to be considerate sir.
And for your information sir,
just to add injury to insult, my wife is expectant! Any time from this moment, she can deliver, perhaps to a bouncing baby boy or girl.
Just be considerate sir, and try to see whether you can bail me out,
of this degrading and embarrassing situation. My children did not have their breakfast, before they went to school! Try to be human sir, and be considerate.
The sting of poverty and inflation,
seems to have sunken deeper, in the common man’s life, making his burden unbearable, and shattering every vestige of hope. If you have any traces of sympathy, to mankind sir, then you can consider my plight,
and act swiftly and accordingly,
in an effort to consider my situation.
MY GRANDMOTHER
My late grandmother
was a notorious witch.
She never spared the lives
of her innocent victims.
My grandmother had a hump on her back. Word has it that,
she developed the hump,
because of the effects of her witchcraft.
People say that, the hump on my grandmother’s back, was the stronghold of her witchcraft.
When I was a baby, my grandmother attempted
to terminate my life, through her sorcery.
My maternal grandmother, acted aptly, by warning my paternal grandmother, that if I died as a result of sorcery, then the former would be forced by the latter,
to eat the corpse.
The local populace, was always appalled, by my grandmother’s wicked operations.
When school going children saw her as they went to school, they would all run frantically, to the bushes in order to take cover,
from my wicked grandmother.
My grandmother was an infamous witch, who dealt with the village folk treacherously.
Her sorcery was so intense, that it scared many people. She was very much dreaded. Some of her close neighbors, opted to leave the village.
They migrated to far places, where they bought land and settled, to evade my grandmother’s wrath.
KAVINYA’S HUSBAND
Kavinya’s husband is a useless man. He is quite irresponsible.
He does not care about the welfare of his family. Kavinya’s husband is a drunkard.
He rises up very early in the morning. He goes to the homes
of the village women, who do the business of preparing the illicit local brew. Kavinya’s husband starts drinking the illicit brew vey early in the morning. He becomes completely intoxicated, by the illicit stuff.
He squanders all his hard earned money, on beer and goes home in the evening, staggering and singing songs, of his purported achievements. Kavinya’s husband is indeed a useless man.
The members of his family are wallowing in abject poverty.
His wife and children, wear tattered clothes. The family is in a pathetic state, but Kavinya’s husband,
is never bothered by his family’s state of affairs.
Kavinya’s husband is also
a wife batterer. He beats his wife mercilessly, in the evening when he returns from his drinking spree.
Kavinya’s husband is not a good man.
His behavior in the village, has stirred a strong wave of concern from the villagers. Kavinya’s husband is a man who does not believe in listening, to any sound advice.
He is a-know all man. He likes being in the bad company, of the other bad men, who are also drunkards like him, in the village.
MY AUNT
My aunt has been bedridden,
for the whole of last month.
My aunt is a good story teller,
but now she is sick. I miss her stories. She has been groaning in bed, because of agony,
that she experiences in her body.
The doctors have tried to diagnose her sickness, but to no avail. My aunt has been suffering and crying.
I do not know what I can do. Nobody knows what should be done, in order to heal her unknown sickness, or alleviate her perpetual pain. I am very much worried, because of my aunt, who has been telling me good stories. These days, she cannot tell me any story. She is critically ill and I am worried.
I don’t know what may befall her.
THE STING OF CORRUPTION
Our society is exceedingly corrupt.
The sting of corruption has already sank deep, into the live line of our society. This is quite an unbearable scenario. The sting of corruption is quite irritating and painful.
Who will bail out our society from this awful and devastating vice?
The rot of corruption can now be evidently sniffed.
Who will save our society from this charging monster, called corruption? Our national wealth, has been plundered. The sting of corruption has caused a lot of havoc, to our recuperating economy.
The cream of the society has completely ravished our economy.
We cannot just keep quiet and let things take their own course.
Our banks have been plundered mercilessly, by the top guns.
Our hospitals have been plundered and there are no drugs in their stores.
Our schools have become fertile grounds,
where the principals become millionaires overnight.
Ours is a man-eat-man society and nobody cares about you.
Ours is a real arena of survival for the fittest.
You should either be ready to eat or be eaten.
Man, this society is merciless.
Don’t you deceive yourself,
by thinking that there are people outside there who have your welfare in their
hearts. You have to count the cost. If you have been running, you must start flying. If you have been wading, you must start swimming.
If you have been soft, you must become tough. If you have been lenient, you must become aggressive.
If you have been dozing, you must become sober. If you have been laughing, you must start crying.
If you have been quiet, you must start shouting. If you have been pretending, you must be realistic now.
If you have been sleeping, you must wake up now. If you have been living in your own imagination, Wake up to reality now.
