HOW SPIRITUAL POWER IS LOST
One of the strangest and saddest stories of the Old Testament history is that of Samson. He was the most remarkable man of his
day. He had good opportunities, but after striking temporary victories, his life ended in tragic failure because of his own folly.
(Judges 13, 14, 15, & 16).
Time and again it is said of him that, “the Spirit of the Lord came
mightily upon him,” and in the power of that Spirit, he did wonderful things. But in Judges 16:19-20, we see him deserted by
the Lord, taken captive and dies with the enemies of the Lord.
Unfortunately, Samson is not the only man in history who, having
once known the power of the Holy Spirit, has afterwards been shorn
of this power. There have been many Samson’s and many more will come. These are men who God has once used and have afterwards
been kept aside. Let us consider why the Lord departs from a man or withdraws His power from him, or in other words,
“How Spiritual Power is Lost.”
1. GOD WITHDRAWS HIS POWER FROM MEN WHEN THEY DO
NOT TAKE CARE OF THEIR SEPARATION TO HIM.
This was the precise case with Samson himself (Judges 16: 19 and Numbers 6: 2, 5). His uncut hair was the outward sign of his
Nazirite vow by which “he separated himself unto the Lord.” The shearing of his hair was the surrender of his separation. He gave up his separation to Delilah, and thus he lost his power. Many men today are also shorn of their spiritual power by Delilah’s.
There was a time when Samson had separated himself unto God.
He turned his back completely to the world and its ambitions, its
spirit, its purposes and he had set himself apart to God as holy, to
Him, to be His, for God to take him and use him and do with him
what He would. God had honored Samson’s separation. God had
anointed Samson with His power.
However, Delilah came to him and he listened to her evil voice and
allowed her to shear him. He immediately ceased to be a man
separated and the Lord left him. There are men and women the
Lord once used, but He does not use them now. You may still be
outwardly in Christian work, but there is not the old-time power in
it. The reason is because you have been untrue to your separation to
God. You have been listening to Delilah, to the world and its
amusements. Would you get the old power back again? There is,
but one thing to do. Let your hair grow again as Samson did. Renew
your concentration to God.
2. POWER IS LOST THROUGH THE INCOMING OF SIN
It was so with Saul, the son of Kish. The Spirit of God came upon Saul and he got a great victory for God (1Samuel 11:6). He brought the people of God forward to a place of triumph over their enemies, who had held them as captives for many years. But Saul disobeyed God in two distinct instances (1Samuel 13: 13-14; 15:3, 9-11, 23).
The Lord withdrew His favor and His power. And Saul’s life ended in
utter defeat and ruin. This is the history of many men whom God
has once used but unfortunately, sin has crept in. They have done
that which God has told them not to do or have not done what God
wants them to do. As a result, God has withdrawn his power from
them. One must listen carefully and consistently to hear what God
wants him to do or not to do.
3. POWER IS LOST THROUGH GREED FOR MONEY
It was through this that a member of the original Apostolic company, the twelve whom Jesus himself chose to be with Him, fell. The love of money, the love of accumulation, got into the heart ofJudas Iscariot, and proved his ruin. “The love of money is a root cause of all kinds of evil” (1 Timothy 6:10).
4. POWER IS LOST THROUGH PRIDE
This is the most dangerous of all the enemies of spiritual power. Many men lose their power because of pride. Such men become puffed up because of the very fact that God has given them power and used them (superiority complex) and as a result, God sets them aside. God cannot use a proud man (1Peter 5:5). “God resists the proud and gives grace to the humble.” The man who is puffed up with pride and self-esteem cannot be filled up with the Holy Spirit. If God is using us at all, let us get down very low before Him. The more He uses us the lower we must go down.
5. POWER IS LOST THROUGH NEGLECT OF PRAYER
It is in prayer that we are charged with the energy of God. It is the man who is much in prayer who God’s power flows mightily. Power is constantly going out of us, as from Jesus Christ when he had an encounter with the woman who had been bleeding for many years (Mark 5:30). We also lose power in service and blessing. If power is to be maintained, it must be constantly renewed in prayer. Many men who God has used and have relaxed in their habit of prayer, have had God departing from them and thus their spiritual power lost, because they did not spend time and their faces before God.
6. POWER IS LOST THROUGH NEGLECT OF THE WORD
Businesses and perhaps Christian duties have multiplied. The Word of God has therefore been squeezed out and power has gone. Many men have run dry through neglecting the Word of God.
